What to look for

Autonomous yard trucks look like this - Strobe lights indicate an autonomous yard truck

How to act around an autonomous yard truck

  1. When driving or walking in the yard, stay clear of AYTs in operation. AYT speed is based on perceived risk, proximity, and yard context.
  2. Be aware that unlike manual drivers, the AYT may park trailers from either the right side or the left side.
  3. Do not drive erratically around the AYTs.
  4. DO NOT enter the blind spot of the AYTs. The location of the blind spot is similar to that of a tractor-trailer operated by human drivers.
  5. Drive within the 15 mph speed limit.
  6. Make yourself visible by wearing a safety vest.
  7. Pedestrians should use designated crosswalks.
  8. AYTs stop before crossing the crosswalk. Wait for the tractor and trailer to pass the crosswalk before crossing.
  9. Be alert. Do not wear headphones or use a cell phone when walking in the yard.
  10. Know the rules for dock door lights (red/green):
    • a. Outside light green / inside light red: AYT will couple to trailer and back trailer onto dock door
    • b. Outside light red / inside light green: AYT will not couple to trailer.
    • c. AYT will stop trailer 3 feet from dock plate
  11. Do not record video; the yard is equipped with a security camera in case of incident.
